Commentary

From score: "Magnificat was first performed in 2003 by Rachel Nicholls (soprano), Ruth Peel (mezzo-soprano), Finchley Choral Society, and Orchestra Nova, conducted by George Vass."

The choral parts are generally SATB with occassional divisis in the sopranos and altos and no TB divisi except in the last chord when the tenors divide.  The work includes solos and one duet for soprano and mezzo-soprano, both requiring skilled singers.

Though the work can be performed with piano only, it is scored for strings, two oboes (with Oboe II doubling on the cor anglais), and one bassoon [0.2(II+ca).0.1-0.0.0.0-str].  Cecilia McDowall states in the score that "the instrumental forces are kept to a minimum to give smaller choirs the opportunity to perform with an orchestra."
